Step 1

Register Your Address

Gather your documents, book an Ayuntamiento appointment if needed, and attend in person to register your address and receive your empadronamiento certificate.

Why is this step needed?

Empadronamiento registers your address in Barcelona's municipal census. Immigration and many other procedures require proof that you live at a specific address.

Usually 90 days for TIE use

Requirements

  • Valid passport and NIE

    Bring originals to the Ayuntamiento.

  • Rental contract or proof of residence

Signed contract, deed, or landlord authorization.

  • Appointment confirmation

After booking, the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Oficina Virtual) sends a confirmation email with the office address, date, and time. Save or print it before your visit.

  • Attend and collect your certificate

On the day of your appointment, arrive a few minutes early, bring all of your original documents, and go to the Ayuntamiento office listed in your appointment confirmation. Important: You must attend the appointment yourself. VisaMesa can help you obtain the appointment, but we cannot attend the registration on your behalf because the city council must verify your identity in person. At the appointment, a city council employee will review your documents, verify your identity, and register your address in the municipal register (the padrón). If everything is in order, your registration will be completed. Once your registration is processed, you will receive your empadronamiento certificate (also called a certificado de empadronamiento). This certificate serves as official proof of your registered address in Barcelona and may be required for future immigration and administrative procedures. If the office cannot issue the certificate immediately, they will explain when and how you can obtain it. Keep your empadronamiento certificate in a safe place. You will need to bring it with you later during Step 5, when you attend your fingerprint appointment. The certificate is one of the documents required for that appointment.
